Heera Mandi (Urdu and Punjabi: ہیرا منڈی) is a historically significant neighborhood and bazaar located within the Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan. Here are some fascinating details about it:

Historical Background:

Established during the Mughal era, Heera Mandi was initially associated with music, dance, and other cultural pursuits. Women from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan were brought to the region, where courtesans were trained in Indian classical music, Kathak dance, poetry, and etiquette.
The area, situated south of the Lahore Fort, became a residential neighborhood for attendants and servants of the royal court and the Emperor. It was referred to as “Shahi Mohalla” or “Royal Neighbourhood.”
Tawaifs (courtesans) were an integral part of Heera Mandi during the 15th and 16th centuries. They entertained the Mughal elite with their exquisite art in kothas (residences) and even performed for the Mughal royal family.

Name Origins:

Contrary to popular belief, the name “Heera Mandi” (which means “Diamond Market” in Urdu) did not originate as a term for the courtesans. Instead, it was traditionally ascribed to Heera Singh, son of Dhian Singh Dogra, who was the Prime Minister during Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s reign.
Hira Singh Dogra established a food grains market in the neighborhood, which first became known as “Hira Singh di Mandi.” The term “Heera” likely describes the dancing girls of the area.

Transformation into a Red Light District:

Over time, Heera Mandi gradually transformed into Lahore’s red light district. British colonization played a significant role in this transition.
Initially a center of tawaif culture, it eventually became associated with prostitution and entertainment of a different kind.

Present-Day Status:

Today, Heera Mandi remains infamous as Lahore’s red light district. It is located near the Taxali Gate, south of the Badshahi Mosque.
Despite its controversial reputation, it’s essential to recognize its historical significance as a hub of art, culture, and entertainment during the Mughal period.
